“Assembling” poetry is how I see mark making. It is there to be read if you like – a story with a visual invitation and appeal. I like it or I don’t like it. It grabs me or tells me nothing even after reading it from every angle. Surely it’s more than “nice”( what is a story if it’s just “nice”?) The story returns back pestering my imagination. When has it arrived?
Jeffrey Smart famously kept adding bits to his works at exhibition openings. Story, imagination trigger, first marks, reworking, scrapping, giving up, flow arrives, work,work,work, more than decoration a story paragraph or chapter of mine for me and maybe for you.
Where are the spaces between? Start there. Walk away. Come back. Sit for a bit. Start again. Let it sit. Framed. I sort of get it, she says but don’t hang it over the bed head.
